Wangsel Institute for the Deaf Overview

Wangsel Institute for the Deaf is situated within the Drukgyel Lower Secondary Campus, with hostel and dining facilities located at the Drukgyel Higher Secondary School campus. The management of the hostel falls under Wangsel Institute, while dining services are overseen by Drukgyel HSS.

Established on June 1st, 2003, initially as the Deaf Education Unit affiliated with Drukgyel Lower Secondary School, the institute's journey began with the initiation of Bhutanese Sign Language Research and Documentation. Founded by two hearing teachers and five Deaf adults, the institute has since evolved significantly.

In the academic year 2004, the institute introduced basic literacy and numeracy education for ten students, marking the inception of its educational program. Over the years, the institute has expanded its offerings, with a current enrollment of 106 Deaf students receiving basic education. Collaboration with Drukgyel LSS is evident in various activities, including morning assemblies, cultural events, and sports.

From 2009, the institute ventured into pre-vocational programs such as tailoring, woodcarving, and bakery. In 2019, it expanded its vocational studies to include tailoring, woodcarving, carpentry, and traditional painting, reflecting its commitment to providing diverse skill sets to its students.

A significant milestone occurred in 2014 when the Deaf Education Unit transitioned into a standalone school, officially named Wangsel Institute.
