Bhutan Sillicon(P)Ltd.,commonly referred as BSMPL amongst industrial fraternity in Bhutan, is a flagship Company under the banner of Tashi Group of Companies, one of the leading industrial ventures in the Kingdom of Bhutan.
Bhutan Silicon Metal is the latest addition of Submerged Arc Furnaces (SAF) among five others already in operation under Tashi Group of Companies. Tashi Group produces more than 75,000 MT of various grades of ferro silicon annually.
Bhutan Silicon Metal’s manufacturing facility is located in the industrial area at Pasakha Bhutan which is 20 kms. fromPhuentsholing town, the Gateway to Bhutan and the commercial hub of the nation.
The Head Office of the Company is ideally located in the Tashi Commercial Complex, in the heart of Phuentsholing town.
Bhutan Silicon Metal was initially conceptualized for the manufacture of pure silicon metal to meet the international demand of silicon metal in the European and American markets. However, the Company is also poised to cater to other markets including India, other Asia Pacific and Middle East countries.
Technology
The plant was a turnkey installation with all plant machinery imported from China, who are pioneer and World No. 1 in Silicon production. M/s Sino Steel, the giant government venture of Peoples Republic of China (PRC) was the main plant machinery and equipment supplier for the Project. The latest development in the SAF and silicon manufacturing technology then was installed at Bhutan Silicon Metal.
The Company has installed a 13.5 MVA furnace equipped with upstream and downstream ancillary and auxiliary equipment. The escaping silica fumes from the furnace is vented through an efficient Bag House system having facility for densification and value addition of silica fumes to micro silica that has wide application in many downstream industries.
Current Status
Since 2016, the Company made a switch over to the production of High Purity Ferro Silicon from the same furnace in the light of sliding silicon metal price in international markets and escalating price of scare raw materials resources. Today, the Company is in good position to produce High Purity Ferro Silicon to meet the customers’ requirements. The Plant machinery is compatible to switch over to Silicon production at any time should demand arises.
Raw Materials
The basic raw materials ie Quartzite, is sourced indigenously from local quartzite mines. The recipe is maintained to achieve good homogeneous combinations of quartzite input. Charcoal and semicoke are used as reductants. Charcoal is sourced from Southern and Western states of India while semi coke is imported from China. Both the reductants have low ash and Sulphur contents, thus, not affecting the quality of the products and by-products.
